Where are we?
Our boats home port is at Rosvik, good distance north of the Arctic Circle (125 km/ 78 miles by road, 100 km / 63 miles by air, 67°28'57.46"N / 15°27'23.09"E), bringing us well into the county of Nordland, the municipal of Sorfold and not far from the centers of Bodoe and Fauske . Our home port, the local surroundings and seascape in which we mostly sail, is in the area where Norway is at its most narrow, where long narrow fiords and steep mountains almost cut the country in two, making the scenery spectacular and stunning.
West of our home port we have the Vestfjord, approximately 35 to 40 nautical miles away. It takes us through the spectacular fjord of Sorfolda. When reaching the Vestfjord, we can see across to the Lofoten Archipelago, the home of the worlds richest cod fisheries (read more on: https://lofoten.info/food-experiences/?Article=677).
The people along this coast is used to hard work and challenges thrust upon them from an often relentless and rough nature. For many the sea and the country has been, and is up until today, the source of a dignified life as well as framing the historical foundation for the way we perceive the Nordland County today.
Salten Veteranbaatlag (SVBL), realizes that only through an intimate and detailed knowledge of history, is it possible to define a path into the future. That is the reason why SVBL intensily workes to preserve well known and cherished fishing- and whaling vessels, each telling people of today the story of their parents and ancestors struggle to bring their region into the future.
All the work carried out under the umbrella of SVBL, is gratis and unpaid. Every penny earned on tours and any other arrangement, is plowed directly and in full, back into the running, insurance, certification and maintenance of our boats and training of our personell.
Vi befinner oss et godt stykke nord for Polarsirkelen, nærmere bestemt et godt stykke opp i Nordland fylke, i kommunene Sørfold, Fauske, Saltdal, Bodø. Lagets hjemsted og mest brukte turområde ligger i området hvor Norge er på det smaleste, hvor lange fjorder og høye fjell gjør landskapet betagende og overveldende. I retning vest og rett ut for stuedøra ligger området for verdens rikeste torskefiske, Lofoten og Vestfjorden.
Kystens folk er vant til hardt arbeid og utfordringer fra den ofte barske naturen. For mange er havet kilde til et verdig liv og danner historisk grunnlaget for det Nordland vi kjenner i dag. Salten Veteranbåtlag har erkjent at bare igjennom å kjenne historien, kan man stake ut kursen inn i framtida. Derfor velger laget å bevare kjente og kjære fangst- og fiskeskøyter, som hver for seg forteller dagens mennesker om forfedrenes kamp for å bringe landsdelen inn i framtida. Alt arbeid som utføres, er frivillig og ubetalt. Alt vi tar inn på turene, går ubeskåret tilbake til båtene og vedlikehold av dem.
